Question of the week for October 19th, 2009
First let me commend you on taking the time to do these questions. I hope you will get something out of them. That being said, you should also understand the level of vocabulary you are using. All of these words are a bit difficult. The context that you put them in should be appropriate.
Here is an example of inappropriate context for the words "rhythm," and "abridged:" "The band abridged the rhythm so it was shorter." The sentence makes sense, but it the context should be more.
A better use of context would be: "The complex rhythm of the musical selection was difficult. Because of this, the musicians decided to shorten there performance. To do this they abridged the song so they could focus on one particular section." Notice that the reader now knows that "rhythm" is an element of a musical selection and that "abridged" means to have shortened (past tense use of the word).
With that in mind...Please use these two words in a sentence or sentences. The context of the sentence/s should show that you understand the meaning of the works. Spelling, grammar and punctuation are all part of the grade. The musical term is "MOTIF," and the ACT term is "HAUGHTY." (that's not "hauntingly.") Good luck.

For those of you who did not go to Toronto, please take a moment to google Montreal, Canada and tell me something that you think would be worth seeing if the Wilmot Band were to take a trip to that city. Once again, do not use "shopping."

Question of the Week for May 18th
Summer is coming. That means most if not all of you will have some extra time on your hands. Some of you will take a summer school course. Others of you will begin working or pick up some extra hours in the job you already have. Some of you will dive into a hobby such as fishing, water skiing or another sport. Still others of you will sleep late, stay up late and basically become vegetables. But no matter what you choose to add to your schedule, if you think about it, you will still have more disposable time on your hands than you do right now.
Based on an article I read in the Kenosha News this morning I have some advise for you. Find a way to spend some time each week as a volunteer.
So here is the question: If you heed my advice, in what way could you offer your services as a volunteer? Think about what you are good at, what you are passionate about and how much time you could devote each week to a volunteer activity. What would you do? This is hypothetical; don't feel that I am going to check up on you. I just want you to think about it.
Later!

Many of you also came up with "Timbre" as one of the five elements of music. Think about what we do in concert band, wind ensemble, orchestra and/or jazz ensemble and tell me one thing you do that deals with timbre. Please remember to phrase your answer in such a way that I don't need to know the question to understand what you are talking about.
